CBD products have become extremely popular in recent years, thanks mostly to a report from the World Health Organisation which found that CBD – or to give it its full name Cannabidiol – was not addictive, psychoactive or harmful.
This led to a huge boost in CBD products in the wellness industry with CBD oils, teas, edibles and vapes becoming increasingly popular, as well as creams and lotions for topical application. It’s also increased the focus on CBD as an area of research, with its therapeutic powers under more scrutiny than ever.
One area where it has shown very promising results is in the treatment of epilepsy. Today we’re taking a look at CBD, epilepsy and how the two are connected and have brought CBD products through to the mainstream.
There are few CBD based medications, and the ones that have been developed and are sometimes prescribed by the NHS are used mostly for the treatment of cancer pain that’s resistant to standard, opioid painkillers, multiple sclerosis, and (as of 2020) for epilepsy.
Sativex is one of the primary CBD based medications and can be prescribed both for the pain and nausea caused by cancer and its treatments, and to control and relieve the symptoms of multiple sclerosis. The NHS is reluctant to prescribe Sativex, normally wanting to see evidence that more conventional treatments have not been helpful first, which can be frustrating for patients. Nabilone is another medication that could be prescribed – a synthesised compound that has some similarities with both CBD and THC and is sometimes called ‘manmade cannabis’.
The main CBD based medication aimed at people with epilepsy is called Epidyolex, which contains a high concentration of purified CBD oil. Clinical trials have shown the promising results that CBD treatment can reduce seizures in up to 40% of patients, and it’s already recommended as a treatment option for the rare and dangerous forms of epilepsy Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome.
CBD Products and Epilepsy
If you’re interested in using CBD to treat epilepsy symptoms and reduce seizures, you are better off talking to your doctor than buying products online or on the high street. Prescribed CBD medication contains Cannabidiol in a higher concentrations and purities than retail products, which gives it more effective clinical abilities.
